CHICAGO - U.S. Senate nominee Alexi Giannoulias released the following statement in response to the unemployment figures released today and to Republican Congressman Mark Kirk's continued opposition of economic recovery efforts, which include his vote yesterday against the HIRE act, a jobs bill that passed the House of Representatives with bipartisan support:

"Today's unemployment numbers provided another sign that the economic recession has hit bottom, but that a strong recovery remains elusive.  Nearly every economist agrees that now is not the time to halt efforts to stimulate the economy.  After the small jobs bill passed the House yesterday, the Senate should immediately get back to work and pass an extension of unemployment insurance that will help thousands of Illinois families and more tax breaks for small businesses that start hiring again.

Hartmarx is the Illinois company that stayed in businesses after Alexi and others stood up to Wells Fargo when that big bank wanted to shut Hartmarx down. When Hartmarx employes appeared in Alexi's primary commercial to discuss why they were supporting Alexi, they said that "we need more people like Alexi in politics. A person that cares."

Yesterday, Alexi was interviewed by Carol Marin on WTTW's Chicago Tonight. The interview was part of a series of interviews and editorial board sessions yesterday to address Mark Kirk's smears against Alexi and Broadway Bank, the community business Alexi's late father started nearly four decades ago.  While Mark Kirk plays politics with the struggles facing Broadway Bank -- the same struggles faced by countless of other small and mid-sized businesses that have been affected by this recession -- Alexi knows the real-world effect of Washington's policies.

Press Release

CHICAGO - In light of the false, reckless attacks from Republicans and Mark Kirk against Alexi Giannoulias and his role at Broadway Bank, the Alexi for Illinois campaign announced that Alexi will be answering every question posed to him by the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune editorial boards today. The campaign also launched a new Web site called TruthAboutAlexi.com, to fight the lies being circulated by Republicans and their surrogates.

"Over the next eight months, Republicans will continue to imply, mislead and smear Alexi's record so that they can to distract from the fact that Mark Kirk's votes for Bush economic policies helped get us into this financial mess in Illinois and that he is completely out of touch with the needs of working families," said campaign spokeswoman Kathleen Strand. "This website will provide a place for supporters and media to get the truth about Alexi and the false attacks against him."

CHICAGO - Congressman Mark Kirk today made two inaccurate claims in his negative, false attacks against Alexi Giannoulias.

"Congressman Mark Kirk wants to distract from the fact that he is a wholly owned subsidiary of Wall Street, bought and paid for by the corporate special interests he voted to bail out while leaving struggling Illinois families behind. While Alexi hasn't been at the bank for four years, Mark Kirk has been in Washington for a decade supporting the failed and reckless Bush policies that got us into this economic mess," said Kathleen Strand, spokeswoman for the Alexi for Illinois campaign.
