Voice of The Southern: Two Democrats, one Republican endorsed for U.S. Congress

On Nov. 2, state voters will pick a new U.S. senator to replace controversial political appointee Roland Burris, who has a seat previously occupied by President Barack Obama. Seats in the U.S. House of Representatives also will be decided, including two Congressional seats in Southern Illinois.

Our Opinion: Alexi Giannoulias for U.S. Senate

[I]n Giannoulias we believe the person we have met is the person we will get in the U.S. Senate. Since his election as state treasurer in 2006, Giannoulias has proved himself a dedicated and conscientious public servant with a genuine concern for his constituents.

Our View: Alexi Giannoulias our pick for U.S. senator

If there’s one thing Illinois needs now, it’s certainty — certainty a candidate is who he says he is and can deliver what he says he can.

That’s why today we endorse Alexi Giannoulias for U.S. Senate.

Two of the state’s largest newspapers endorsed the candidacy of U.S. Senate Nominee Alexi Giannoulias today in their Sunday editions.

The SJ-R wrote that as Illinois State Treasurer, “Giannoulias has proved himself a dedicated and conscientious public servant with a genuine concern for his constituents.”

Saying its choice is crystal clear, the Chicago Defender today endorsed Alexi Giannoulias’ candidacy for U.S. Senate.

"The current state treasurer has compiled a stellar record in office, and would vote in support of the initiatives that President Obama has started,” the newspaper stated. “[Giannoulias] has stressed that he would be accountable to the Black community….Republican Mark Kirk has already stressed that his aim is to make Obama a one-term president.”

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch endorsed Alexi today, citing his strength of character and principled stand on the issues:

Alexi Giannoulias is the choice for Senate because he understands the existential threat caused by the reality that 20 percent of Americans control nearly half of the nation's earned income and 84 percent of all forms of wealth.

As President Obama came home to Chicago today to rally Democrats, the Chicago Sun-Times announced its endorsement of Alexi, citing his record of saving Illinois jobs, his principled stand on the issues, and his plans to move our country forward. Read the endorsement in its entirety below:

Giannoulias has earned a seat in the U.S. Senate

In sizing up the two major-party candidates for the U.S. Senate in next month's election, we find ourselves returning to the most fundamental of questions:

Who is this man? Where does he stand? What would he do?

We think we can answer those questions, within a comfortable margin of error, with respect to one candidate. But not at all with respect to the other.

We endorse Democrat Alexi Giannoulias for the Senate, impressed by his character, his achievements as state treasurer and his obvious great potential. With a triumvirate of Giannoulias, Sen. Dick Durbin -- the Democratic Senate whip -- and President Obama, every squeak and chirp in Illinois would be loudly heard in Washington.

CHICAGO - Illinois Treasurer and Democratic nominee for Senate Alexi Giannoulias today picked up key endorsements from the nation's two leading environmental advocacy organizations, further solidifying his campaign's momentum and broad appeal. The Sierra Club and the League of Conservation Voters each announced that they would be supporting Giannoulias over his Republican opponent, Congressman Mark Kirk. Kirk had received these endorsements in all but one of his past campaigns, and each was considered a pillar of his moderate bona fides.
