Alexi Giannoulias released the following statement regarding the decision of the Supreme Court to allow D.C.'s same-sex marriage law to go into effect:
“The march toward marriage equality was dealt a setback yesterday, and I am disappointed with the results. But we know that change never comes easy. I believe strongly that we cannot give up hope, that we must not stop moving forward, and that no matter how difficult the setback, we must never stop fighting for people to be treated equally under the law.”
As State Treasurer, Alexi has demonstrated his commitment to LGBT issues. Ushering an era of fairness and equality into the Treasurer's office, Alexi extended medical, dental and vision benefits to the domestic partners of office employees in June 2007. The Treasurer’s Office had been the only constitutional office not to give health benefits to same-sex partners of state workers since the Governor extended the benefits in May 2006.
From The Chicago Sun Times:
Giannoulias takes stand in favor of gay marriage; He also wants to end military's 'don't ask, don't tell' policy "On this subject, at least, I would hope Giannoulias has set the new standard that everyone else will have to meet."
