Alexi Giannoulias used his office as State Treasurer to launch new green initiatives, including a popular program to encourage the use of fuel efficient hybrid cars and another to incentive green business practices with lower interest loans. He also drafted and helped pass a bill to clean the air by halting excessive diesel truck idling in Chicago and other highly populated communities.

Saying they no longer trust Congressman Mark Kirk to lead on issues important to them, leaders from several Illinois reform and advocacy-based groups joined together today to show their support for U.S. Senate Nominee Alexi Giannoulias in the Nov. 2 election.

The Illinois Education Association, Sierra Club, Planned Parenthood, League of Conservation Voters, Human Rights Campaign, NARAL and Defenders of Wildlife had all endorsed Kirk during his previous campaigns for the U.S. House.

CHICAGO -- U.S. Senator John Kerry joined Alexi Giannoulias’ U.S. Senate bid today, lauding his clean energy agenda, but he also warned of the corporate special interests trying to influence the race.

“Alexi wants to see America move to a clean energy economy that will save our environment and create jobs, grow our economy and strengthen our national security so we invest in American technology rather than send billions to the Middle East,” Kerry said. “We need leaders like Alexi in Washington who will stand up to the big special interests that are determined to derail a strong clean energy bill and do the bidding of the status quo. We can’t let that happen.”

Tonight, President Obama will be addressing the nation about the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster.  This morning, Alexi announced his New Energy agenda, which he believe offers the common sense steps we must take to break our addiction to oil and create a new clean energy economy.

Alexi’s agenda starts with the most pressing matter facing us today – cleaning up the spill in the Gulf and ensuring that this never happens again.
